Week 33

Third Trimester

Bones and Brain

Baby's bones are hardening and brain development is in a final, intensive phase. Your body is preparing for birth in subtle but real ways.

This week's tip

💡 Sleep is harder than ever right now — a warm bath or shower before bed, combined with a few minutes of slow breathing, can help your body wind down even when comfort is elusive.

Development

  • Bones are hardening, except for the skull which stays pliable for birth.
  • Brain and nervous system are making rapid final connections.
  • Baby's immune system is receiving final antibody transfers through the placenta.
  • The lungs are almost fully mature.
  • Movements remain strong and frequent.

How you might feel

  • Sleep is very difficult — try a pillow between the knees and under the belly.
  • Lightening (baby dropping lower) may or may not have happened yet.
  • Colostrum leakage may be noticeable.
  • You may feel very ready — or very unprepared — or both.

Things to do this week

  • Finalize your hospital bag — it should be ready by week 36
  • Install the infant car seat and have it inspected
  • Plan for meals during the newborn period — batch cooking or meal train
  • Know the signs of labor: regular contractions, water breaking, bloody show

When to contact your care team

This is general guidance, not medical advice.

  • Contact your care team immediately if your water breaks before 37 weeks.
