Second TrimesterWelcome to the Second Trimester
The second trimester begins — often called the 'golden trimester.' Energy typically returns, nausea fades, and baby's growth accelerates.

- The kidneys are now producing urine, which goes into the amniotic fluid.
- Lanugo (a fine, downy hair) begins to cover baby's body to regulate temperature.
- The liver and spleen are starting to do their jobs.
- Baby's sex organs are developing, though it's still early to see on ultrasound.
How you might feel
- Nausea typically eases significantly.
- Energy levels often improve noticeably.
- Round ligament pain (sharp twinges in the lower belly) can start as the uterus grows.
- Nasal congestion is common due to increased blood flow.
- You may notice your bump more clearly now.
Things to do this week
- Book your mid-pregnancy anatomy scan (weeks 18–20)
- Start thinking about baby gear — research takes time
- Stay active — gentle exercise now is excellent for you and baby
- Eat iron-rich foods to support increasing blood volume
When to contact your care team
This is general guidance, not medical advice.
- Contact your care team if round ligament pain is severe or persistent — it should come in brief, sharp bursts.
